The brief for our Sydney House called for a four-bedroom dwelling of modest proportions. The main living areas are on the middle level, opening directly onto a rear terrace and garden, with the garage and media room at the lower ground floor and bedrooms on the top floor.
One of the main features of the house is an intimate sitting area located near the entry, indirectly lit by a skylight above a banquet seat.
Another feature element is the double height stair hall with a glass wall abutting a bamboo filled courtyard located to the east, with continuous obscure glass at the upper level providing light and privacy to the top floor hallway. The open tread timber stair is contained on the west by a tracery of rusted steel, dividing the central dining room from the entry while allowing filtered and patterned light to illuminate the space.
